iPhone / iPod External Battery?

I just received my 8GB iPhone and I knew the battery life has not been too great to begin with, I just need to find a decrease in external battery that will work with my iPhone and iPod 5G. One thing however is that I have heard that many of these battery packs only work if your iPod / iPhone has a full load, so if the internal battery is depleted by what does not work at all. There's nothing that the cost your actual iPod / iPhone and which runs on AA or AAA batteries. If you already have something like this to send a notice, any information would be useful. I just have to understand what is best for my needs. Thanks
